When it comes to city-breaks with a cultural focus, few destinations can compete with the depth and range of attractions offered by the French capital. A wealth of art galleries, exhibitions, museums and sites of historical interest can be found right the way across the city, but visitors intent on immersing themselves in Parisian culture invariably gravitate towards the city's intellectual epicentre; the 5th Arrondissement district (also known as the Latin Quarter). Just south of the river Seine, this charming section of the city is the focal point of French academia and an excellent place to stay during a cultural visit. The 5th Arrondissement is home to some of the finest hotels in Paris and in the current economic downturn there are lots of bargains to be had.
Located in the heart of the Latin Quarter, the Panthéon is a former neo-classical church that has become the resting place of a great number of historical figures. Those who are buried in the Panthéon include Voltaire, Victor Hugo, Rousseau and more recently Marie Curie. The K+K Cayré Hotel (Boulevard Raspail), situated only ten minutes walk from the Panthéon, offers a luxurious boutique-style experience. Housed in a 19th century building typical of the architecture associated with Georges-Eugène Haussmann's renovation of Paris, this sumptuous hotel provides high quality personal care that is a cut above most other Paris hotels.
Those interested in ancient history should visit the remains of the Arènes de Lutèce, some of the most important surviving archaeological evidence of the Gallo-Roman era in Paris. Built at some point in the 2nd century AD, the site was originally a Roman amphitheatre and would have once held up to 15,000 spectators. The venue was used to showcase a variety of entertainment including theatrical productions, circus acts and gladiatorial combat. The remains were discovered during the construction of the Rue Monge in 1869 and, following a campaign led by author Victor Hugo, the site was designated as a public archaeological park in order to preserve its contents. A considerable number of original features are still visible today including parts of the vast stage and wall cages, which are believed to have contained wild animals. Entry to the Arènes de Lutèce is free.
The Musée de Moyen Age is located in a beautiful 15th century gothic abbey which hosts medieval artifacts including manuscripts, stained glass and the famous 'Lady and the Unicorn' tapestries. The museum also hosts the frigidarium section of the Thermes de Cluny, a system of ancient Roman baths which date back to the 3rd century AD.
A stay in the 5th Arrondissement is an excellent way to experience the sophistication of French culture and enjoy some of the best galleries, museums and hotels in Paris.
